me and my friends want to update a save file for a game with a custom coded file from a youtuber, that allows extras in the game for free. we want to know if a virus could be residing in the file. ive downloaded it to a folder and weve scanned it and nothing came up. but were still unsure. could it be a virus?

What game is the save file on most games only read data and the save file probably have some changed data as long as you don't open any .exe .jar .msi etc to get the save file it's okay

Reminder⚠️

I'm just speaking from experience so what I say may not work 100%

Isn't that a multiplayer game?

yeah. also i havent opened any files on there own. it was only a save file that was downloaded and i havent opened it

Well if it only is put in a "save files" folder and not in the actual in game folder it should be fine but doing this may result in a ban in the game if it's detected in multiplayer

okay. so no virus?

Probably not only the risk of a in-game ban

no. viruses can only exist in files that you execute, like an exe file. regular text documents, images or the likes cannot contain viruses as they don't store executable binary code. be less paranoid, windows defender will chime in the second something's wrong. viruses are so uncommon nowadays.
