Hi. I built my first gaming pc a few months back and I have been using a WiFi adapter for an internet connection and my speeds are decent but my ping is relatively high. My router is in the room next door so I was wondering what do I need to do to get an Ethernet connection as I don’t know anything about it. There are Ethernet wall ports in my room so do I just buy an Ethernet cable and plug it in to my pc and the other end to the wall port or something?

I mean it depends. You would need a box that is on the wall, and that would have where all the ethernet connections come from. You would need a switch there.

Once you get the switch there, get all the connections coming in, and plug them into switch, and then the switch to the router. Afterwards, plug in your pc to the wall, and you should have internet!

Most routers have LAN ports on the back that would function as a switch.

Assuming the wall ports work, you'd just need two CAT5e Ethernet cables:

1) From your PC to the wall port. Double-check that there are 8 pins in the wallport. Some folks have confused telephone wiring (2-4 wires) for ethernet.

2) From your wallport to your router. Be sure your wireless router has LAN ports on the back. If you post the manufacturer and model number, we can give you a definitive answer. :)

If the other end of that cable from the wall plate leads to the router and is connected correctly then yes. Otherwise it may not be connected at all. That's up to whoever hooked up the wallplates.

Agreed.

If the wall port is indeed an ethernet port, you'll still have to determine where the cable runs in the wall to where it terminates. That termination point has to be plugged into your modem/router if you are to establish a wired connection through your wall port.
