I used to think it was only this one jump drive that would freeze my computer when I plug it into the front use 3.0 panel. Apparently, anything I plug into it freezes my computer. It doesn't even have to have a device connected to the other end. I took a usb cable that connects a phone to a wall charger and plugged it into my computer with the phone not even attached. My computer froze. Apparently I don't even have to plug it in all the way either. I just have to TOUCH the metal piece to the front usb port and my computer freezes. The funny thing is that it only does this if it's the first usb device to be plugged into the front panel since startup. If I start up my computer and touch it with the metal usb part, it freezes but if I plug it in before I start up my computer it works fine. I can even take it out and put it back in with no problem as long as I started up the computer with it already in the port. What can I do to fix this? I have no clue at all.

Check your wires from the header to the motherboard, sounds like a short somewhere. Make sure the connector for the usb ports is securely in place.

I wiggled them a little. Hopefully that did something.

I have the same problem on a school computer. It is only 1 certain usb that does this. It is a PNY 32 GB all metal flash/thumb drive. When beginning to insert the USB it shuts down the computer. It has not made any sort of connection to the USB, it simply touches it. The computers are brand new. It is in a lab at my university. This happens on any unlucky computer but does not happen every time. It is probably a 50/50 chance so far. One one of the computers it causes a real crash of sorts and it now displays "BOOTMGR is missing press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." I am positive it is just my USB but it was fairly pricey and I do not want to use a different one because this one is very fast. What would cause this problem?
