Efficient NAS, media streaming & web hosting CPU

Go to solution Solved by DaSh__,

Alright guys looks like this thread is solved, at least for it's聽requirement.
If I woudn't have any other needs, the Intel Pentium G5400 or the聽Ryzen 3 3200G would be the cpu to go, but now I got聽new needs and for that i'll open up a new thread - a聽CPU with ECC and Intel AMT聽or AMD聽Dash or even better a motherboard with IPMI compatibility.
Thank y'all!聽馃榿

Hi there,聽馃榾

I鈥檓 building a 1gbit/s home server for basic NAS, media streaming and webhosting capabilities for up to ~10 concurrent users.

The difficulty I鈥檓 facing is choosing the right CPU that鈥檇 both be able to handle peak loads and still consume as little power as possible when standing around doing nothing.

Since the server will be hosted at home - it should be as silent and efficient as possible.

Here鈥檚 a list of CPUs I鈥檝e already taken a look at:

I think the intel pentiums still idle at a bit less power, and have a slightly faster cpu, so thats probably what id go for here.聽

Why are you getting the pro versions of the cpus?

Nothing you listed will need much cpu power, so basically any modern cpu will work fine here.

Do you have any specific Intel Pentium in mind?

Id get something like a g5400.

What is running on your webserver? Im guessing it won't need much cpu with 10 users

10 users is easy, even an atom cpu will have no problem.

The problem is when you need to transcode the files, like in a plex server, that's when you need some horsepower.

But for general file transaction, it's not that demanding.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750聽| 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull聽| Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

If you are not needing any rendering/transcoding to be done on the server, then I would recommend a A10 9700 or Ryzen 3200G with an AM4 motherboard.
