Sounds like a defective board or busted software/firmware. 85 is still perfectly safe on a modern CPU

45nm silicon started suffering from longevity issues at anything above 70 degrees, so that's really normal.

But in general modern CPUs can easily handle 85 degrees or 90s (according to apple :D) for long periods.
