Ryzen question

do you need to flash, maybe. MSI max boards don't and most boards selling now shouldn't but it is possible something has been sitting for almost a year so there is no recent bios on it.

To provide a bit more detail than the other two, who commented here:

Some motherboards' boxes have a sticker on them telling whether they have an up-to-date BIOS or not and what CPUs the BIOS supports.

Some motherboards have functionality that lets you update the BIOS with no CPU installed from a USB-stick -- check on the motherboard-manufacturer's website if the mobo you are looking at has such a feature or not. If there is no mention of such a feature, the mobo doesn't have it -- do NOT assume there is such, always assume there isn't, if not specifically told otherwise.

Last, but not least: ask from the store you're planning to buy from, whether the BIOS that is installed on that mobo supports the CPU you wish to use or not. Some stores even offer to update the BIOS for you before shipping the mobo.

Most of the good mobos, which frequently sell out all of their stock will have a very recent bios. Other ones like the MAX series from MSI have guaranteed support for Ryzen 3000 out-of-the-box.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
