So I was playing a game and all of a sudden I heard a loud pop in my pc and everything shut off, I had been looking at my CPU temps and GPU temps and there were all normal. But when I had taken it apart my PSU was so hot I couldn't touch it for a good 10 min I tested the powersupply in an older pc and it didn't work so I'm thinking it was that. But could it have killed something else in my pc?

Entirely possible. If you got really unlucky and a whole damn shitstorm hit the fan, it could've killed literally everything in your PC. No way of knowing, however, without testing.

I'm not sure maybe a deep cool psu but I put that 5+ year old powersupply in this build thinking it was still okay in this one I have now it's a 850w powersupply and that's all I really know, I'm out rn so I can't have a look and see.

I literally built this pc like 3 weeks ago haha.

Ryzen 5 3600, GTX 1060 6GB OC, msi tomohawk max mobo, corsair 3200mhz RGB ram. I would be fine with a 650w but from what I can see theres not much price difference plus I wanna have that bit of extra power for upgrading in the future.

in which case would you be better off buying a cheaper psu.

i say never cheap out on a psu.

This isnt like more expensive psu = more performance. Its more expensive psu = safety for your life and possibly even save your house burning down.

Ive had bad experiences and i say rmx minimum

Aslo do motherboards have a safety feature for power surges or anything like what happend to me?

Cheap ones - no. High end ones - basic.

I mean, the power supply is the one that is responsible for protecting the system :/
