I cant get my ethernet to set to gigabit.

Desmond20012

I recently bought a new pc with gigabit Ethernet (my old pc doesn't support gigabit). And my router is rated for gigabit too. But i just cant seems to get my connection to gigabit Ethernet , it is constantly at 100mbps. I have tried:

-changing between multiple cable cable support (i have cat5e)

-updating my lan driver.

-reinstall windows

im new to these things. any help fixing it?

Which router is it? E.g. my FritzBox has its LAN ports set to "green mode" by default, which limits them to 100 Mbps, which needs to be disabled to make them run at 1 Gbps.

Are you sure you are not confusing megabytes and megabits?

What does windows network config say about the connection? Does it show as 1gbit?

Make sure you don’t have any VPN’s, even if they’re not turned on. This messed with me and took me weeks to figure out!

This. Or a failure in auto-negotiation. Check settings both router side and PC side. Network card settings are kind of hidden behind many clicks in Windows 10, but I think the shortest path is to go to Computer Management, locate the network interface and go to its "properties". You can always try forcing gigabit in at least one of the devices instead of leaving it in auto.

its a modem router provided by my isp. I don't see any option that indicates that my router has "green mode"

That's exactly what my FritzBox is as well (cable modem/router). In Home Networking, Network, Network Settings it has LAN Settings where you can switch each port between "Power Mode" and "Green Mode" to switch between 1 Gbps and 100 Mbps. It was just an idea that yours might have something similar hidden in its management UI.

If you have more than one PC (or laptop) you could try connecting your PC to the other one directly, see if Windows shows the connection as 1 Gbps. If it does, then you should be able to rule out both your PC and the cable as the issue. I take it you're using the network properties to check?

thanks for the advice, i tried using the cable my other pc is using and it appears that it is now at 1gbit speed. It appears some of my cat5e cable are faulty. thanks again :D
