Modem Recommendations

Snowmnason

Hello!

I am upgrading to Gig speed so, and I don't want the included modem, I want to save as much monthly cost as I can.

I am going the Optimum as my ISP, and I am trying to find something under 200$ and everything I see all look the same with features and all.

Currently I have google WiFi mesh routers, so I don't want a combo.

Thank you for your Recommendations!

Hello!

Some Arris cable modem probably, dunno if they're the absolute  best, but they seem popular. But don't buy one used, because it might have issues being tied and locked to the previous account.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Hey thanks. That was the one I was looking. So that makes me feel more confident in getting it!

They offer both Coax and Fiber if I recall. So what are you on?

If on Coax you need a Docsis 3.1 modem, from what I have read, most if not all of them are pretty solid. If on Fiber, well if you don't have much of a choice I'm afraid.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Speaking to optimum recently it is definitely fiber. And I was thinking the same. There are like 3 modem only docsis__ and the reliability and reviews are so mix

If you're on fiber then you have to stick with the ISP device, unfortunately.

You can look around the gateway's webGUI to see if "bridge mode" can be activated, then use your own router in default configuration.

I will keep that on mind. I think I am lucky enough that it comes with a router that I can give back so I can used mine, if not then I will start shoping for something else. Thank you for the advice and answer!

But out of curiosity. Why wouldn't I be able to buy a modem? Are the ISPs getting smart with this or is it my situation of already having a router set up? OR its just not available because its relatively new?

Because fiber doesn’t use a modem it uses an optical converter, which can go by many names. Those haven’t come to the consumer equipment side yet. I don’t expect them to as fiber is a bit of a confusing standard. As a result with Fiber you can’t change out the ISP equipment. With the exception of the router if your ISP doesn’t use any type of combo device.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
