I need help catching up on what's going on in the PC building world

waggythegeek

Hello LTT community,

I used to come here a lot, was an avid builder and was pretty decent at PC stuff back in my day. However, it's been a long time since I've been paying attention to what's going on in the PC hardware space. I stopped paying attention before/just as intel started doing whacky things with their CPUs. I was stepping away from the desktop space for the time being, headed towards an eGPU setup (which I'm using now, and am quite happy with). However, I have friends with PC questions, and an old desktop i want to revive to be used as an HTPC for my housemates, and a few other PC-related projects to embark on in the future. As such, it's looking like it's about time for me to step back into the PC building community. That being said, I'm struggling with where to start. CPU and GPU naming conventions now are a lot stranger than they used to be, and there's a whole lot of terms being thrown around that I'm not completely sure about. So, if it's not too much, could someone explain to me these new naming schemes, and maybe fill me in on what's going on in the PC world currently? What hardware has changed? And if it turns out i'm asking a really big question, how do people recommend I get started acquainting myself to the modern PC building space? Any good video series to watch? Forum threads to read? Basically, how do I re-learn the modern meta of PC building?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

Honestly just look at tech tubers latest videos on product launches and you will learn alot as they usually compare the latest with previous generations

CPU: i5-4690k @ 4.4 GHz | RAM: 12GB DDR3 1333MHz | GPU: Sapphire Pulse RX 580 4GB

I would strongly recommend watching all of Hardware Unboxed's video. That channel for me has the best, most unbiased , most detailed review of any PC products in the market. They also do news videos and AMA videos.
