Beyerdynamic DT 990 250Ohm

Wingfan

What are some comparable headphones to these?

I have a pair of these, wire frayed(?) from being  twisted to much im guessing. These are/were great for music.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Thanks, seems straight forward. Looked on the website, no price on the cable, emailed them for availability.

There are other cables available online in the $15ish dollar range, I can't say how easy or hard it is since I've not done it myself but with basic soldering skills it doesn't look too difficult.

I haven't used a soldering iron since.....?..... But this looks basic enough even for me, will have to find a soldering iron.

Do you have any suggestions on a sound card? Would like more control/tweaking with my music.

Sound cards won't provide more control, software will but IMO software touching you audio isn't something you want.
Also, don't click that link

If your confident enough to mod them I would just do a replaceable cable mod that way you do t have to completely replace the cable Everytime it breaks

Remember you heat the pad/wire and touch the solder to it, not to the iron. Solder only goes on the iron before you begin to act as a heat transfer fluid (think thermal paste).

You got this. 💪

What is the advantage of a sound card?

Im using an external amp for an extra boost in volume but would like a cleaner sound.

Going to try that EQ, looks a little intimidating. Im an amateur 'audiophile' .

If you already have an external amp, get an external DAC. I'd recommend optical if you have an optical port on your PC, but USB technically is higher performance.

All a sound card is, is a DAC and an amp on a card that slots into your PC. Most of them have multichannel output, but if you don't have surround sound speakers this isn't needed.

One of the advertised features for DT990 is easy maintenance.

Anyhow, it is a matter of soldering 3 wires to relatively large pads. If you really don’t need coiled cable, you can buy thin microphone cable and 3.5mm plug and make your own cable. Unlike many other headphones Beyer uses much thicker leads which makes soldering easy. Just don’t skimp on cable and jack quality. Use good brands for cable such as Belden, Mogami and Canare and good brand of  plugs such as Amphenol, Switchcraft or Neutrik. There are more expensive options, but price/performance ratio decreases significantly.

Update: Put thought into this, and dont really have confidence in dont this.
Talked to a freind who thinks he can do it but also wants to buy them for $75USD.
Think ill do this and  get a new pair but the 600Ohm version.

Thanks for all the feedback

You will need a quite powerful amp if you purchase the 600 ohm version, just keep that in mind.

I don't have personal experience with this but a cursory google search shows people suggest a more powerful amp for these headphones.
The E10K is only rated for 300 ohms.

Ya, just seen that. Pricing better amp/dac, or even a reasonable price sound card
