Budget: CAD 800$ or less

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: steam games mostly

Other details: I'm building this machine from scratch and have been choosing parts based on recommendations, YouTube (linus) and my own knowledge (very stupid) and I'm basically looking for a evaluation of my part choices, mostly importantly my cpu and motherboard, although the case and storage haven't been purchased yet either, rather than type out all the parts Ive just attached a screenshot hope thats cool. I want a machine that'll run most games at 1080p or 1280p, or any 16:9 ratio at medium graphic settings, Im used to playing on minimum settings at 680p with 20 fps so anything is an improvement!

The ram is at a pretty low frequency, ideally look for 3200mhz, or at the very least 3000mzh. Also rather than the ryzen 1600 14nm/AEBOX, you should get the ryzen 5 1600 12nm/AF, since it is essentially a ryzen 5 2600 with lower clock speeds and same price, so generally speaking it will overclock better.

The motherboard is good but if you can find a B450-A Pro (Max or non Max) or any motherboard in Tier C from the motherboard tier list (link down below) with a similar price to the B450 Pro4, then get it, since motherboard in the C tier are able to deliver more power, and therefore be able to run more power hungry cpu's at full speed.

Otherwise everything seems to be fine as long as you're ok with 500GB of storage for your games, programs and OS.

1.$180 for 1600?

2. 2x4gb is no good, why not 2x8gb

Your budget really doesn't allow for much. I'd strongly suggest getting something used.

As for your components:

  • That's way too much for a processor that old
  • 500GB will quickly run out. If you're on that tight of a budget, you're likely stuck with a smaller SSD and an HDD
  • Try to get at least wifi AC
  • Ryzen, especially the older variants, love faster memory; that memory won't do well

Save up another $100, grab yourself a used GTX 980, and this:
