Ram Overlcocking

i recently installed two more ram sticks to fill my board. im now at 32 gigs ram (4x8). the new amount of ram is not running at its advertised frequency. its sitting at 2400 while it was bought for 3200. i had the same issue when i first built the pc with the first two sticks and i just enabled the xmp profile and it ran at 3200 no problem. now with the new sticks it wont change to 3200. when i try restarting after exiting  the bios it just reboots several times before finally staring back up, but still stays at 2400. i figured it was trust ram training but when i tried disabling xmp and re enabling it, it booted right up with ram speeds set to auto. i tried running them at lower speeds too to see if it just wasnt stable, with no luck. i tried voltage at 1.3 up to 1.4 and still stays at 2400. 

 

im running a r 5 2600 oc to 4.0

asrock b 450m pro 4

team t force delta rgb 3200 4 sticks of 8

 

my cpu base speeds say 3.4 in task manager but all cores are running at 3.9 so im guessing its still running at oc speeds. 

 

ive tried multiple speeds with multiple voltages and no luck it all just says 2400 in both task manager and bios

Have you enabled XMP/DOCP mode? All DDR4 memory runs at 2133MHz/2400MHz regardless of it rated frequency.

 

To 'auto' OC your memory you can enable XMP mode in your bios, this detects the rated speed for your memory kit and OC's it to that speed. For AMD systems this is referred to DOCP instead of XMP, but it is the same thing. Keep in mind on most motherboards anything past 2666MHz is considered overclocking so mileage may vary, just because a kit of RAM is rated for 3000MHz does not mean it will be stable. 
 

If you cannot enable XMP/DOCP you can attempt to manually adjust DRAM speed and voltage (not hard).

Yes I tried the xmp multiple times with different voltages. It is only running at 2400 and won’t do anything different

does xmp work with only two sticks ? 

did you try updating the chipset drivers ?

Not uncommon, I suggest the following.

 

Go into Bios and disable XMP, (excuse the Asus terminology, it is the only bios I know well), then go to advanced settings, then AI tweaker. 

 

From there you are going to want to adjust your memory frequency, I generally recommend single incremental jumps, I would start at 3000Mhz. So from 3000MHz you would go to 3066Mhz, then go down to DRAM Voltage and set it to 1.3500V. Save and exit Bios. If you get caught it a boot loop and the settings reset to default you know the memory OC was not stable. 

 

If stable enough to post into Windows then run a quick stress test, I recommend Cinebench R15 (runs faster than R20) and if stable restart and post boot into Bios. Also, keep in mind stable in a quick stress test is not the same as stable during a gaming session. Windows stop codes related to memory will also let you know that your memory OC is not stable.

 

If you hit instability along the way start upping the DRAM voltage by increments of 0.010V (so 1.360V, 1.370V, 1.380V... etc) until stable, I would not recommend exceeding 1.450V though. 

 

So once stable at 3000MHz you can push further, 3066MHz, 3133MHz, 3200MHz, 3266MHz, 3333MHz, and so forth, each time testing stability, possibly adjusting voltage and this is how you OC your memory, eventually you will hit a wall.

Xmp did work on two sticks. Also I believe my cpu oc is now disabled. Cores are running higher than base speeds but in both task manager and bios it says 3400 instead of the oc 4000. I haven’t updated anything. Also I thought even with four sticks it would still run in dual since quad isn’t supported typically

^ this and i would also say try memtest86 just to be even extra sure your ram will work at a certain frequency 

also one more thing try 2933 then 3000

Agreed, running memtest first would be good, and yeah does not hurt to start at a lower frequency.

Would this affect cpu speed? My cinebench r20 score dropped 400 points

if you mean memtest86 then no it wouldnt 

if you mean ram speed then it might but if you lost silicon lottery there is kind of nothing to do about it 

and zen + imc sucks so it is not your fault

Probably the interconnect or infinity fabric and it's FCLK 

Remember the interconnect on zen+ is bad

So handling quad memory and an oc is pretty hard to do for it

ah. dang. maybe ill try lowering the oc. but maybe not because its running at 3.85 when its base speed is 3.4

First I recommend just setting the ram then the OC

ive got it stable at 3000 at 1.35v. it wont seem to go any higher even at 1.4 volts. also my cpu is now running at 4ghz now. go figure it adjusted the cpu speed
