which gtx 1660 should I choose

Aflous

Hi folks,

I am lost with all these variants of the GTX 1660 ..(I came here after watching Linus video about this chip)

short story: I got my hands on an alienware (Aurora R3 9-years-old gaming rig) that wasn't used since 2015 due to a defect in the migration to win10 (thanks Dell for not supporting this 3000£ computer just 3 years after purchase..)

I managed to make it work now but the gpu clearly needs an upgrade (maybe cpu too, but one step at a time)

current specs:

MoBo: Alienware 046MHW LGA1155

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600; Alienware High-Performance CPU Liquid Cooling

Memory: HyperX Genesis 8GBx2 + 2GBx2 DDR3 1600 Dual Channel (yeah 20GB although it only supports 16Go officially 😄

GPU:Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 Dual GPU (3GB VRAM)

PSU: DELL 875W 80+ silver

Storage: SSD 850 EVO 500Go + 1 TO Seagate HDD

I would like to upgrade the gpu and although I am aware the MoBo is only 16x 2.0, I think this won't bottleneck any of these 1660 gpus (cpu might be the 1st to choke here)

I have found these 3 gpu intresting but can't figure out which one is the most powerful (pricing is confusing and specs not accurate I think on amazon) and most off all, which one would perform the best with my setup (use is mainly 1440p/1080p gaming and probably VR)

https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07PFQV7YW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The TI should be the most powerful right?

any other suggestion is welcome, but I need to make a purchase tonight and most preferbaly from amazon.fr

thanks for your help 🤗

Yeah the Ti is the fastest followed by the super. Your processor's going to be a bit of a bottleneck as you pointed out, with any of them.

go for the gigabyte 1660 super. you will be hugely bottlenecked by that cpu in 1080p resolution or under. in 1440p or up the bottlenekc isnt that much.

but wouldn't the 1660 Ti be more futureproof? I don't really mind spending those extra 50€ and I might soon go for a cpu ugrade

1660ti is around 5% faster and not worth it. and the model you linked has only 1 fan meaning that it will get same performance as the 3fan gigabyte model.

the Ti and the super both have 1 fan..

Am I not sure if both are GDRR6 though..

here are the cons for the super according to techpowerup

  • Cooler is much too weak for the card's heat output
  • High fan noise
  • No idle fan stop
  • No backplate
  • Runs in power limiter most of the time, which complicates overclocking, too
  • Power limit not increased over NVIDIA reference
  • No hardware support for RTX and DLSS
  • Memory not overclocked

That Gigabyte card linked is not only the most expensive, but it's only a 1660, not 1660 Super.

GTX 1660 Ti is only 2% faster than the GTX 1660 Super. If you're going to go with something more expensive than GTX 1660 Super you should step up to RTX 2060 or better. Of those three cards you listed the only one that makes sense is the PNY GTX 1660 Super.

Don't buy a single fan card then. Though honestly, I'd be surprised if even a single fan cooler held back 1660 Super considering it's a 120 watt gpu. Also if you want raytracing and DLSS you have to buy an RTX series gpu, the cheapest of which is the RTX 2060.

Also, while I'm not very familiar with VR and the hardware needed to run it, I suspect 1660 Super / 1660 Ti might be too little. 1660 Super is a very capable 1080p card and can run 1440p a lot of time with a little bit of settings tweaks, but high refresh VR? Not so sure. Also I think a 2600k is going to bottleneck you bigtime on VR. It certainly will bottleneck you some on regular gaming. I have a two generations newer i7-equivalent (Xeon E3-1231v3, same as i7-4770 but marketed as a server processor) and for instance in Shadow of the Tomb Raider the Xeon E3-1231v3 bottlenecks my 1660 Super pretty hard at 1080p. It even bottlenecked my old GTX 970 at 1080p.

thanks for these insights. Do you have any suggestions for a cpu ugrade? should I go for a ryzen?
