why does red dead 2 run like garbage

blu4

Is my system really too under powered to run red dead 2 decently? I have a  3700x, 32gb ram, rx 580 8gb.

In the game my GPU only uses like 4gb of vram at the most (even most settings maxed out), If I have all the settings at the lowest I can hit my max refresh rate. But as soon as I bump the settings up to med or mess with the settings above low It run at 30FPS or under.

I thought my system would be good enough to run this. All the other games I can run at my max refresh rate of 75fps or higher.

For comparison... my 2080ti cant run the game at maxed out settings either at 1440p. When I turn everything up to max, I get like 30-40fps. Just turning it down to a mix of max and high I jump up into the 70s and 80s in FPS personally then. Its a very hard game to run on PC.

cpu's fine. gpu's the problem.

it's not just about how much vram you have. the gpu clock, architecture etc. can all come into play.

get a better gpu perhaps.

I run at 1080p, I mixed the setting a lot with med, low and med, but anything above low and it doenst want to run over like 32fps. I feel like I should get better. I looked up bench mark videos and copied the settings of a guy with the same specs and he had 65PFS, I got 28 when most the settings in his video are at medium

So we've had the "can it run Crysis" meme for years now. Its about time RDR2 take its place since it practically set a new standard for graphics. Its a very demanding game to run, so you won't be able to go nuts with the graphics settings like you can in any other game even with a 2080TI.

Isn't Xbox 4K really upscaled 1080p or something?

You can try over clocking your vram I guess, among other things. Games like RDR2 only necessitates the need for the release of Nvidia's 3000 series GPU's and AMD's RDNA 2 GPU's. The main reason being is they are expected to be optimized to put those PCIe 4.0 slots to good use. It should provide a tremendous boost in performance since its double the bandwidth of 3.0 slots. This is why people should upgrade to 500 series motherboards.

Yes, its not true 4K, so those settings don't mean that much. Even at 1080P, it still might not run as well as yours due to its CPU bottleneck. I'm glad they addressed this with the next gen consoles.
