RAID with out a RAID Card?

Hello everyone,

 

I just wanted to know if it is possible to have a small RAID set up without a RAID card. I have a Gigabyte z-170 Gaming K3 and I just want to put 2 hard drives in RAID. If this is possible, what type should I put them in. I'm pretty new to storage so idk.

Through Bios or Windows storage spaces. For ease Storage Spaces would be my recommendation, that storage array would basically plug into any windows 10 machine and run just as any connected hard drive would. Safe and easy as well.

Yes, you can. 

 

You can either use software RAID or onboard RAID using the controller on your motherboard. 

 

Software RAID is more what I'd recommend using if you're going to use one as it can take hardware changes and is a bit more reliable than onboard. Though, you cannot boot from a software RAID array as it requires the OS to load first. 

 

What are you trying to get out of RAID? There's not many situations where I would advise using it. If it's data security/loss prevention you want, you're much better off setting up a proper backup than using RAID.

 

If you want redundancy and already have a backup, then your only option is RAID 1 with 2 drives, which will mirror the data on both drives. If we assume they're both the same capacity, you'll only have the capacity of one of the drives available in RAID1. 

 

If you don't care at all about the data on the drives and you want some sequential read/write performance improvements (random read/writes don't really benefit), then RAID 0 is an option, though it's not really something I'd recommend. Real world performance isn't great and if you lose one drive, you lose all data across both drives. If speed's the objective for temporary data, you'd be better off buying a cheap SSD to use as a scratch disk.

If configured as Raid 0 (striped array) then yes.
