AMD did state that they aren't going to keep Mantle to themselves (most likely),

that it'll be released for all platforms.

So... Time will tell.

I don't think Nvidia will pick it up on principle alone.

While AMD pushes devs to adopt Mantle, Valve is pushing devs to adopt opengl.

Unlike Mantle, opengl is not reliant on directx and it will allow devs to target all operating systems (OSX, WIndows and Linux) and all graphics hardware (Intel, AMD and Nvidia).

So it will be interesting to test optimized opengl vs mantle performance. Unfortunately we have no such test case atm.

NVidia is also pushing openGL. In the recent steam dev days an NVidia dev gave a wonderful presentation which was about draw call overhead on openGL. Basically the end result was that with 2 extensions that both AMD and Nvidia supported you could get a 35x increase in performance by merging the draw calls. Its not even as if it convoluted the game design it was actually a better approach in general to not be changing the state constantly but to be using bindless textures. Anyway the end result was somewhere around equivalent to 250k draw calls on Mantle in terms of object count and such, so it exceeded the performance of it substantially. I found that kind of interesting considering all it took was the addition of 2 calls to the latest version of openGL and no other special handling. A hell of a lot cheaper to game devs than switching wholesale to a new API that only works on one vendor when most already have an openGL like path for the Playstation 3 and 4.

I'm not so sure. If the performance really ends up making a difference, I could see them taking it for sure.

If you can make your stuff run MUCH better for free, wouldn't you? (same argument as Overclocking :P )
