I'm having Wi-fi issues on my old laptop

I have an issue where I can't even turn on the Wi-fi..

it olny offers me a choice between manually turning it on or an automatic detection after 1/2/3/4h (automatic options do not work)

When I restart my PC the Wi-fi icon is interactive and after I press it, it turns darker and nothing happens (attached picture)

I have no way of connecting to a wired connection.

 

I've explored many forums and nothing seems to work.

Am I stupid?
