Alright folks.  I am computer hardware savvy, but when it comes to some of the complexities of some of the OS to choose, I have concerns I am not going to be able to pull it off.

First, the hardware: Intel Core2Duo E7300 2.6GHz, 8GB DDR2 Ram, Sata0 - 120gb SSD, Sata1 - 1tb WD Black, Running Windows 7 x64

My needs:

  1. File server. There will be a D-LINK DNS-320LW Sharecentre with 2 x 1tb WD hdd in RAID1 for files

  2. Plex media server. This will utilize the internal 1tb WD Black

  3. As this is going to be on a separate network im not worried about it conflicting with my network/NAS, but ideally the software needs to have at least an Android App.

  4. Ability to log into the server remotely and stream/upload/download any files while on the road (bearing in mind im in the UK and the user is in New Zealand).

  5. Ability to be remotely logged into by Google Remote Desktop or something equivalent, and ideally run Pulseway

That is really it. I also want this box to be relatively energy efficient. I am not sure if FreeNAS has much energy savings/sleep mode features.

OK...so in my mind we are talking a Windows 7 vs. FreeNAS vs. Amahi vs. Tonido vs Ubuntu with Owncloud vs other linux based server setup.

Which would you run based on the above needs, my need for some simplicity, and my desire for the most possible energy efficiency?

Thank you in advance

I wouldn't use Win7 for that these days, considering it's not longer in support.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

would ssh work? do you need a gui?

Id probably just run a linux distro on it like centos or ubuntu or debaim.

If you got the hardware, why not try them all and see what you like?

If you got the hardware, why not try them all and see what you like? only issue is, i can play around till the cows come home, im just worried about the constant format/rewrite of the SSD for the OS, and if i try to set it up on the network i currently have, it will conflict with my current NAS (Synology) config
