So from the title anyway to increase wifi speed cost free? I've done all the basic stuff like disconnecting other devices and using wired on my PC but my WiFi is insanely slow, today was a pretty good day for my wifi and I was getting around 700kbs upload and 400kbs download which of course is very slow still, frustrating when a game update only a few gbs needs 5/6 hours to complete, it's makes me dread updates than rather be excited for them, my mum refuses to get faster wifi even though it's around a £1 more to get 100mb wifi, she just states "if it's nothing why don't you pay the extra" and when I say yes she doesn't anyway, so I don't even bother asking, it's barely enough to watch 1080p on YouTube and 2 people at once can't

So I just want to reserve a amount of wifi or something for my pc, I think Forza horizon 4 took 2 days and warzone took just over a week, meant I couldn't play games during those times unless I paused the download or was willing to put up with an unplayable experience

Any suggestions for anything I can do, I usually get around 150kbs upload 40/50kbs download

What is broadcasting the signal, something sounds wrong there.

We get those speeds in the worst parts of my in-laws house and they are 30Mb/s up, 8 down.

They get the full 30 and down to 10 in most of the house.

i5 8600 - RX 6600 - Fractal Nano S - 1080p 144Hz

Where are you located?

Honestly, if she won't even let you pay the $1 a month extra to increase speed... nothing we suggest is going to do anything.

If she doesn't care that $11 gets you 100Mb and $10 gets you 1Mb...  she really doesn't want you having faster internet.

Agreed. If you’re under her roof, then it’s her rules. But if you make a living and are the main consumer of the internet connection, I don’t see why you shouldn’t  pay the entire monthly bill to start.

It's a wifi box we got from the company, but I have a cable running under the floor from the hallway to my games room, wireless on some like a PC or a laptop is just a joke, it rated I think for 11mbs

I'm 17 so moving out isn't really an option in the uk unless I get a huge debt, house prices here are crazy, a flat is more than a house in the US by a far bit

Also my mum does complain about the WiFi but blames it on her phone and just ends up buying Moto's latest sub £100 phone, she won't listen to anything I say about technology, even though she's buying useless rubbish, a phone barely lasts her a year, I'm still using my pixel I bought in 2017 with no problems, but she thinks I'm trying to upsell her on a phone or something, she literally does not care about anything technology related, it's bad enough when a game takes a week to download but I couldn't send an email the other day

Yeah, so the best you can do is call the ISP and ask why you're not getting the 11Mb connection at your house, maybe they can troubleshoot.

Some expensive flats there where you live, $300K+ for a flat, damn.

Yeah, there are houses for maybe around £60/£70k but they are in really poor areas with bad drug abuse and have a PC there would just be stollen, it's a horrible place to be without money the uk

If you get close to that on ethernet, just use a wired connection. It will be much more stable and reliable than WiFi and you can share it between your console and computer in your room.

I unfortunately get the 150kbs on Ethernet, half the time wifi doesn't even stay connected to my PC if wireless, lan is the only remotely viable solution for me

And this is while plugged directly into the ISP’s modem/gateway?

How is your network set up? What are the makes/models of the network devices?

Run a wireless survey using WiFi Analyzer and post the graphical output for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Label the signal SSIDs and let us know which is yours.

Right, so call the ISP and throw a fit that you're not getting what you're paying for.

Right, my point was please don't make assumptions on the housing market in the US.  It has as much bearing on your internet issue as your flat prices.

Realistically you're not going to move out over slow internet.

Also, for game updates, you can take your game library on a portable drive to a friend or public place that has faster internet?

I could but it's a pain, during lockdown it's difficult anyway and I'm not really close to much, there's a cafe that offers wifi and for some games I have done that but it's still a 15 min walk up hills and mud paths with a laptop in pretty much raining most days conditions it's far from ideal

Yeah I could I'll see what's going on, does location have an effect on speeds? Not I'm the middle of nowhere but the nearest town is 15mins away and it's a tiny town, 3 cafes and a whsmiths, and a restaurant a little further, there's about 20 houses on my street but it's an isolated street surrounded by farms

Wow, that's a seriously excuse-loaded sentence.

Damn near the "uphill both ways in the snow" our grandparents used :)

Sounds like you don't want to call your ISP or go anywhere.  Don't you have a bike or a car?

So what response are you looking for from us?  Magically make mom pay for faster internet or give you a snake-oil settings tweak?

Wow, that's a seriously excuse-loaded sentence.

Damn near the "uphill both ways in the snow" our grandparents used :)

Sounds like you don't want to call your ISP or go anywhere.  Don't you have a bike or a car?

So what response are you looking for from us?  Magically make mom pay for faster internet or give you a snake-oil settings tweak?

Well it's mostly farm land where I live, there's no paths until I get to a main road and the road is windy and I don't like getting hit by tractors, I just want to play games in peace, not asking for much I shouldn't have to go to a cafe 3 times a week to update games, if I could I would just get something like stadia but it's not even gonna connect

I'm not lazy and live of excuses, I spent nearly a year sourcing parts for my build, I built the case completely from scratch using some wood and tools I got from a farmers barn, and found

I really don't ask for much, i help out around the house, just spent the last few days removing roof tiles, pressure washing them then carrying them back up scaffolding and back onto the roof, I'm not some lazy 17 year old who likes around all day, I do pull my weight just my parents are stuck in the past, if it's new, they refuse to have anything to do with it

Life isn't bad for me but I just wanna play a game maybe the same week it came out

It's saying link speed isn't supported on this "device or wifi adapter" so I don't knowspacer.png

@Stargaze obama

Please remove the image with your public IP address.

You’re not in a congested wireless neighbourhood and your wireless broadcast channels are far apart from each other.

Assuming that the top-most network is yours, it seems like you haven’t rebooted the network in 11 days. Try power-cycling the modem.

And you haven’t answered the question about your network devices.

Ok

What do you mean the makes and models of my devices? My phone and PC makes?

Ok

While we're waiting on you to reboot the ISP's modem/gateway and get back to us on the exact make/model of your network devices, I've reviewed some things.

It seems that your ISP's device supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands (the SSIDs have the same name of NOWTVTSQMD on channels 11 and 36 respectively), but you're connecting to the 2.4GHz band using a wireless-N adapter. Two more things to do...

  1. In addition to locating the information above, please determine the make/model of your computer's WiFi adapter. Can be found in 'Network & Internet Settings' in Windows 10.
  2. Is your WiFi adapter located in a desktop or laptop? USB or PCIe?
  3. Differentiate the SSID names for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals so your devices don't end up jumping between the two. For example, NOWTVTSQMD and NOWTVTSQMD-5G. Place older/slower devices on the 2G SSID, whereas newer/faster devices like phones/computers/tablets can go on the 5G SSID.
  4. In your modem/gateway's wireless setup, change the broadcast channel to channel 1 (so it's far away from TALKTALK4EDA12), ensure that security/encryption is set to WPA2-PSK-AES and experiment with expanding your channel width on the 2.4GHz band to 40MHz if that is available. Similarly, ensure the same security/encryption on the 5GHz band and experiment with higher channel widths like 80MHz or 160MHz if available. You don't seem to have any neighbours with WiFi to cause interference so you can expand on the widths.

Devices I use

2016 pixel

Custom PC(Xeon 2630, Chinese x79, rx570 4gb, 32gb ddr3 ecc)

Laptop(Acer es1-531)

PS4 (original)

Xbox 360 s

And an Asus x55m(I believe, used as a htpc)

My htpc, PC, PS4 and smart TV are using Ethernet, the test conducted uses a WiFi card, and Intel centrino, and my pixel is also wireless, there are quite a few devices on the WiFi, my mum's phone, dad's phone and work phone/iPad, sister's phone, brothers tablet and phone, the htpc and Acer laptop is shared around though

I've never messed around with the WiFi before, do you mind telling me how I'd do the above or where I can find the information to do so, thanks
