I just want to get people thoughts on this, I've been playing with chrome's new data compression and found that when i enable compression that my ad-away app no longer blocks ads, this is to be expected as all traffic is now affectively coming from google.

My question is am I saving more data by not allowing ad's to download in the first place with ad-away or by compressing all the data with googles data compression?

Do I put up with ads and potentially save data or remove the ads and have the additional screen real-estate when they are removed?

no way to test unless you actually measure the data usage amount.

Don't block ads, they're the only way people like Linus make their money (well Linus has sponsors too, which are just unblockable ads). Just live with them and take advantage of the lower data consumption.

What do you use to block your ads? I have been looking to block them on my phone for awhile. To test it I would look at chromes data usage on your phone, then load a page with compression on, measure the difference then load the same page with it off and measure the difference again to see which way you save more data.

Ads are very small compared to alot of things you load on Web pages. Blocking them would probably only reduce data usage by a small amount (I'd think maybe 5% at most).

Comparatively, the data compression has saved me about 22%.

Blocking ads on my mobile just gives me so much more screen space on many pages I visit, on some pages ad's sometimes taking 1/4 of the screen. I was thinking about using My Data Manager - Data Usage  https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm&hl=en_GB to measure the data usage unless anyone knows of a better app?

@PhiberOptik - the app I'm using is called ad-away I'm not sure if its available on the pay store any more.
