Hello forums,

I'm looking for a 4TB External HDD and I'm wondering whether I should purchase a Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 drive.

I'll be using my on board Thunderbolt port on my Maximus V Extreme.

Thunderbolt does have some security issues, so be wary of that.

I frequently use Thunderbolt and I have never heard of nor experienced any security issues with it.

As far as OP's question, what kind of price difference is there? I presume it is a mechanical hard drive, going with Thunderbolt won't provide any speed boost because it will be limited by the speed of the hard drive.

tb is 10gb/s, usb3 is 5 gb/s, the hdd can read and write with 200 MB/s. so theres really no difference.

So, it's best to purchase a cheaper USB 3.0 external HDD?

essentially, just get a cheap external drive, that actually has a fast drive inside, like wd black or seagate barracuda. usb3 or tb doesnt matter.

Thunderbolt would be faster but more expensive, why not internal?

What are your guys opinions on buying 2 4TB WD RED drives and running them in RAID 0 in a USB 3 enclosure?

It's kind of a waste, why cant you put the drives into your case?

I only have Sata 2 ports left as I'm already raiding 3 WD Velociraptor in raid 0.

That actually doesn't seem like a bad idea. It would utilize the available bandwidth over USB 3. The Red drives are perfect for the application as well. They are designed for continuous operation in NAS environments.

Hello forums,

a 4TB external drive cost $300+ while a USB 3.0 4tb external drive cost $150

you are paying more that 2x the price for negligible performance difference if any.

i also doubt a 4TB HDD drive would be able to saturate USB 3.0's bandwidth.

Yeah, we're all just a bunch of idiots experiencing nothing more than the placebo effect.
