I need a new Phone. I greatly prefer IOS and prefer a larger screen. The XS max and 11 max are just too damn expensive. Plus I dont like face ID, or the notch. So that leaves the 7 plus or 8 plus.

The 8 plus is 120-150 USD more plus it has the disadvantage of being more fragile. Id get a apple silicon case for either, but im a little worried that wouldnt protect the 8 plus if it was dropped onto concrete. Is the 8 plus worth the extra price?

Screen size is too small. I basically use my phone as a mini tablet, so the larger the screen the better. The only thing the SE is better on is the processor/gpu, but even the 7 plus should be fast enough to web browse without any lag. Which is all I really use the phone for aside from calling/texting and taking the occasional pics or vid. Ive done some light gaming but the 7 plus would still be good enough for that I reckon.

I'd recommend the 8 plus just for the extra year of updates, going by previous phones records 6s is going to be abandoned this year and 7 next year so if you get the 8 you're guaranteed updates up until at least iOS 16. iOS 15 with the 7 Plus.

Plus wireless charging is really nice to have

What about the iPhone X? I've seen it around $400-$500.

Again, screen is too small. What matters for web browsing is screen width. You read left to right. The fact they made the display taller by eliminating bezels doesnt really give a better web browsing experience. The screen is still much smaller regardless of how they list it on paper. Plus i hate faceid.

Id have to show you what im talking about. Its hard to explain, but screen height is just less important than width. Theres a reason pc monitors are much wider than they are tall.

Also keep in mind some of that additional screen height is taken up by the stupid notch, so its not usable screen real estate.

Yeah i can just unlock my screen with a passcode but its so much easier and more natural using a thumb or finger. Im hoping apple eventually finds a way to imbed fingerprint id into the display, especially in an age of face masks.

How is it smaller. The 7 plus and 8 plus have a 5.5" screen while the X has a 5.8" screen...

Yes it does, by fitting more content.

Face id is just optional.

On paper its bigger but in usage it is much smaller in my experience, when viewing videos it feels more like the 4.7" iPhones than the plus size for instance

I really only need this phone for a year or two. Until the iphone 13 or whatever theyll call it is out. Then ill probably splurge for a flagship phone assuming were not in the middle of a pandemic apocalypse/great depression.

The 11 pro max is nice but not worth $1100 USD.

In that case 7 Plus might be a good option

11 Pro Max is a great phone I love mine but considering we're only 4 months from the 12 line I wouldn't recommend it at full price anymore. Could you wait until the 12 releases before making a decision? the 13 is most likely going to be an iterative upgrade of the 12's redesign so you may want to just go for the big upgrade in september

I thought about just doing that. The rumors with the 12 are no touch id and the continuation of the notch and face id. Physically itll look slightly different with flat vs curved edges, but functionally it seems the same.

I really hate face id. I work as a paramedic and ER tech and for the foreseeable future will be wearing a mask on the job, not to mention out in public off the clock, and ive heard face id doesnt work well with one, among other problems. Granted touch id doesn't work wearing gloves either.

Touch ID is gone for good, Apple rarely if ever go back on a decision once they remove something. As for the mask issue they're releasing an update soon to deal with that, if it detects a mask it goes straight to the pin screen instead of waiting for face ID to fail before doing so. Not the best solution but since you would be wearing gloves TouchID is useless anyway.

Apart from the mask issue I would take FaceID over TouchID any day of the week, it's just better and after a while you forget its even there.

From what I've seen the 12 is shrinking the notch and flattening the sides to look more like the iPad Pro. No idea on the internals yet other than A14 which just furthers the lead they have with the already monstrous A13, and a LIDAR sensor which is on the new iPad Pro (mainly used for AR)

Ive read Apple and others have been trying to develop touch id embedded into the display because many people arent happy with faceid.

Initial rumors were that the 12 would have this, but apparently they are still running into problems or its cost prohibitive. I dont like faceid but its not a showstopper, unlike say a curved display like the samsung galaxy, which i will never buy.

Really its just the price of large screen iphones that gave gotten out of control. Just give me a budget version thats an upgraded 8 plus with smaller bezels and more durable glass and a little better battery life and im good. The 7 plus was originally around 769 when it released and that seemed too pricey. Now were up to 1100 for entry level plus size i phones.

I picked up an XS Max certified preowned from my carrier, it was a brand new phone for half price, it came with AppleCare and let you buy the +.  Its probably a little more than you were looking to spend, but its such a massive upgrade from my 7. I think after conversion it worked out to be about 645 USD. I don't miss touch id, even though I thought for sure I would. The notch isn't too bad on the max, it would probably be more noticeable on those little screens on the other phones.
