urgent data recovery

Go to solution Solved by Kilrah,

NO it is not the same. Photorec recovers individual files but without any metadata, you don't want that unless it's last resort since the result is mostly useless. Testdisk rebuilds the partition table and hopefully gets you back to original state.

Testdisk is a command line program, it has examples in the doc.

So basicly my friend was over trying to fix my usb stick. Meanwhile alongside the usb stick there was also a 1tb hard drive plugged in via usb. I dont know what he did but he accidently did something to the external usb hard drive and now it doesnt show up anymore. After that he installed "EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard". After a scamm all my files showed up but this software costs money to recover the data. Could it be that he just unmounted the drive or something so i just need to remount it? Is there maybe a free data recovery software i could use?  I need the data very soon to be able to continue working.

The thread got deleted and with that the instructions on how to do that. Also i was trying to ask if there was any risk in doing that and if it was possible that something else might be the problem.

I don't think the thread got deleted, I can still see it. The instructions were:

Press Win + R, type cmd and press enter, then type in "diskpart" and press enter. From there a new window should show up. Type in "list volume" and find your drive, then type "select volume #" to select that volume based on its number, and finally type in "assign letter=_" with whatever letter you want to give the drive, D is the most common for second drives.

As far as I know there is no risk if you follow the directions.

Also i just now remembered i think he selected that 1tb drive in diskpart and typed "clean" Before using the software the drive showed up in diskpart but after the software told me that not recovering the data could cause me to loose it the drive didnt show up anymore. It only showed up in the partition manager after initializing it.

Testdisk may be able to reconstruct the partition table if the issue is that he deleted partitions.

Ok i figured out how to start Testdisk. What an achievment right xD? Seriosly though thanks for helping. Im analyzing right now. So I think since the files are all still there it seems like just the partition got deleted. I'll mark it solved when I can get back to working on code.
