Hi, so I'm in the process of upgrading my CPU, Motherboard and RAM. I did build this PC on my own and it went pretty well at first but now is time to upgrade. Sadly I can't afford to upgrade the GPU as well as everything else plus I want to wait for NVIDIA to release the new cards anyway so a few more months with my current card is fine. I've already ordered and paid for the parts before someone says that 10th gen has just been announced! I've actually been waiting for the 9900k to arrive for about 3 weeks now (out of stock at time of purchase) but I'm happy with my choice after some thorough research. There are longer term plans for upgrading the GPU and probably the monitors but for now it will do until I have a bit more cash.

The upgraded PC; https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tB8KRk

So the upgrades are;

i7 6700k -> i9 9900k

Asus Z170p Fan Cooled -> Gigabyte Auros Z390 Pro Wifi & H100i AIO

HyperX 16GB DDR4 2133mhz -> Corsair Venegance 16GB DDR4 3200mhz

So as this is my first upgrade since the build I'd ideally like it to go as smoothly as possible so just want to know of any issues with the above? I thought perhaps PSU as its only 650W but according to PCPartPicker it seems to be ok? I potentially might add another 16gb of RAM in the future also.

The planned GPU upgrade will be a 2080Ti or the new card equivalent when they are released depending if they are any good or not. I am aware that for that I would most definitely need a new PSU so I guess you can include a new PSU when I upgrade the GPU at the tail end of this year.

Short to mid term I'd add another m.2 SSD and replace the current one with a Samsung but not in any rush to do so just now.

Anyone with any thoughts or advice feel free.

"Only," 650 watts will power almost any gaming PC out there.

Any particular apps that benefit from Intel? If not, Ryzen is highly recommended, especially since you could upgrade to their next gen later this year on your current motherboard.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I need?

Mostly gaming, but a bit of everything really.

At what resolution and refresh rate?

Don't buy the 9900k. You can get literally the same thing (if not a touch better) with the 109700k at a significantly lower price.

If you can sell your motherboard or return it, that's what I'd do.

Same with the 2080Ti. Wait for the next gen parts, as we're so close to their launch it doesn't make sense to drop the money on a top tier card.

Of course the new ones are going to be better than the current gen.

For gaming, Intel will likely still have the crown, but you're best to wait and see the reviews.
