I am pretty new to PC building and am looking into buying or building a game server that I would have placed in a local data center.

As such I need to have it built in a rack mounted case, preferably only 1u or 2u max as more would cost me in space rental.

The main purpose of the machine would be to host a minecraft server which needs to handle somewhere between 25-50 people (and a few web services but nothing huge)

My concern is that minecraft is notoriously bad at multi-threading so I need a cpu that has a high per thread performance.

As for disk space, I only need 1TB ish... but id like to have it in a RAID 1 configuration just in case a drive fails.

I wouldn't have any use for a graphics card but maybe someone can confirm that for me. It seems that game servers only really needs CPU, RAM and storage space and GPU wouldn't be used at all but i'm not confident in my google abilities so I could be wrong lol

if you can point me the right direction it would be really helpful, my budget is somewhere between $500-1300 which I think should be more then do-able.

Thanks for the help!

You kno3w co-location services are more expensive then renting a dedicated machine?

If you're going to be co-locating, its typically charged per rack "U" so you want probably a 1U server.

I'd consider a Dell R620 barebones with caddy's included.

Then get a Xeon E5-2667 v2 and some ECC DDR3.

For the disks since you don't require much space I'd just go SSD's. Some 1TB Samsung 860 EVO's.

if you go new I'd expect 200-300 for case+PSU.

you got 2 ways to do boards, cheapest or spend 200-300$ on a server board with ECC support

i3 or xeon. (very few amd am4 server boards)

32gb of ram.
