Hi all,

I'm realising that I have no need to upgrade my computer or phone in the coming months but have a birthday coming up. I'm turning 20 and reckon I'm about 1 month away from my family starting to ask for ideas so I've been thinking about getting a decent camera.

My dad and my sister both use Canon 1300D DSLRs so I'm very much tempted to stay with Canon (so I can borrow lenses if I need to) but if anyone can come up with a good reason why I shouldn't I'm all ears.

I'm not 100% sure what the camera will end up getting used for but some scenarios with a reasonable chance are for landscape photography (when I eventually get to go back to university I live in a rather picturesque seaside town in Scotland) and taking pictures and potentially video at Scottish Country Dance Events. I might also use it for some Astrophotography as I study Astrophysics at university and would like to try it.

I'm trying to decide if I go with something like what my dad and sister both have (1300D type DSLRs) or go with a mirrorless camera like the Canon EOS M50 and get an adaptor to let my borrow their lenses (I don't know if this has any major drawbacks).

As you've probably gathered I'm not very experienced in this area so would appreciate any advice or recommendations.

1300D are EF/EF-s

M50 can be adapted to EF/EF-s from EF-m. EF-m is a bit of dead mount, there is only a few lenses on it.

budget?

I was in a camera thread yesterday and another user gave a very good piece of advice that I think may also help you. Ergonomics is a huge deal when it comes to a camera purchase. How does it feel in your hands? How does it feel when pressing buttons? Do you like the user interface? The overall feeling of the camera in your hands can make on plenty of different use cases. If you are an endurance user, holding an uncomfortable camera for long time periods can be straining on the hands  Aside from that, I own a Rebel T5i and I love it. Canon makes really good products in my opinion. If you are entry level, a Rebel series would be very capable for you. You may find yourself in a boat where some lenses will be more expensive than the body itself, and Sigma is a company that makes very good lenses that are compatible with Canon bodies.

If you like, you can post some pictures or links to some cameras/lenses/kits that you are interested, and we can help you decide on which would be best for your specific use case.

Cheers!

Probably looking at £400 or less preferably but I'm happy to buy used. Both my dad's and my sister's cameras were used and we just shopped around to make sure the lenses weren't scratched to hell

another 1300D isn't a bad option. a 60DA would be good for astrophotography,

My only concern on the 1300d is the lack of a mic input. I given how relatively inexpensive it is though I would probably find some kinda janky way to attach both a shotgun mic and my phone to it if I was needing run and gun audio

if you are after audio in you'd need a 750D or a 200D both are 24mp 1080P 60 cameras

you could step down to a 180mp the 600D 700D are going to shoot the same stills as a 60D all 3 have audio in.

the other option is you get something like a zoom h1n or tascam recorder stick it in the shoe mount to record audio and sync in post using a clap

Since I'll probably only be filming myself for the foreseeable future I'll probably just get a lav mic and record to my phone and sync it in post. The price difference between a 1300d and even a 600d makes that I good idea

you could also get something like a

Tascam DR-40

Tascam DR-10L

Zoom H1n

for audio
