fans on gpu suddenly go full speed no reason

Snowarch

My pc used to do this on boot only. temps get are at less than 40 degrees so no way its this.

my pc used to do this on boot once in awhile, now it does it more often for a minute or two at a time. should i be worried or is this normal on a p106, or could it be something as simple as loose pcie or bad as a dying gpu?

main rig:

CPU: 8086k @ 4.00ghz-4.3 boost

PSU: 750 watt psu gold (Corsair rm750)

gpu:axle p106-100 6gbz msi p104-100 @ 1887+150mhz oc gpu clock, 10,012 memory clock*2(sli?) on prime w coffee lake igpu

Mobo: Z390 taichi ultimate

Ram: 2x8gb corsair vengence lpx @3000mhz speed

case: focus G black

OS: ubuntu 16.04.6, and umix 20.04

Cooler: mugen 5 rev b,

Storage: 860 evo 1tb/ 120 gb corsair force nvme 500

May be thermal paste is getting bad.

Check idle temps and stress temps by using stress test and compare it others p106

I don't think GPU dying. Its mostly due to bad contact between GPU cooler and GPU.If u can replace thermal paste it should be solved

Hope I helped

my idle temps are 29degrees on a fresh boot. under minecraft (100% gpu usage, and about 45% fan speed) less than 55 degrees. i find it odd, but for me minecraft is more gpu intensive than gta, so thats why i say that.

@Shreyasb

do you have the latest firmware for this gpu?

PC: Motherboard: ASUS B550M TUF-Plus, CPU: Ryzen 3 3100, CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34, GPU: GIGABYTE WindForce GTX1650S, RAM: HyperX Fury RGB 2x8GB 3200 CL16, Case, CoolerMaster MB311L ARGB, Boot Drive: 250GB MX500, Game Drive: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD.

Peripherals: GK61 (Optical Gateron Red) with Mistel White/Orange keycaps, Logitech G102 (Purple), BitWit Ensemble Grey Deskpad.

Then it's thermal paste is good.May I know what brand of p106 are u using and its driver version

driver 418 is what i use, but 430 is also selectable in the "additional drivers" tab. i cannot use 430 because its bugged. gog games, wine, and minecraft work no issue but steam itself will not open, so its not an option. the driver i use is from that ppa.

https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

as for the gpu brand, i assume axle as it says that on a fan.

I have heared that axle3d or inno 3d use not so bined chip so that they could cut cost

I.e The whole GPU is somewhat cheaply made and all those components are also cheap may be because of this ur getting these kind of problems

Bined chip nothing but quality chip here chip is the gpu.Have u heared about silicon lottery it is the same.

There is possibility that one of contact  of gpu may be damaged or any of contacts in motherboard is damaged ,can't say which one

never heard of silicon lottery, but i think i got it chip quality. thanks. ill try looking if the cooler or its loose where pcie slot the gpu is in is.

I'll explain these in a simplified way

So first of all binned : now every chipset is made of silicon that is semi conductive but not all of them are made equal so some may achieve an oc profile or a certain level of conductivity without needing alot of voltage  because the silicon is alot higher quality and those are called binned chips meaning they were hand picked because of their great conductivity

But some are bad quality meaning they can't achieve a OC profile or a level of conductivity without  alot more voltages so they are usually worse

And now the firmware : the firmware is basically what tells the hardware to act in a certain way in certain situations such as temps etc and it also connects the hardware with the soft so they can work together

Hopefully this helped :D

i think the fan may be bad, but i got a nicely binned chip then.

looked up the information for a p106-100 and it says memory clock of 8008, and base clock of 1506/1709 boost. mine is getting 1847-1911 "graphics clock" and 8012 "memory transfer rate" less than 70 degrees. does that mean i can overclock it, or did the driver some how overclock on its own? this is when i view powermiser while running a game. the "graphics clock, and " memory transfer rate" are real time. IMG_20200501_0327358586876367778581226.thumb.jpg.f0aa473266b12d0ead25ebd8788e20af.jpg

That doesn't mean anything the only way you can tell if it's binned or not is by trying to manually of it

And that GPU is a reference design with reference power phase
