Those are two completely different price brackets - why?  You either have 2k to spend on CPU and mobo (used at that, for the i9) or not.

The answer is simple - depends on your price bracket and workload.  The 3600x is slightly faster single core, and has future upgradeability at a better price by and far.  However if your workload is multithreaded the i9 wins hands down.  But I suspect you don't have a workload that would utilize that, or you wouldn't be asking that question

And you're assuming he's getting it from the same place you have access too. There are plenty of people who sell high end parts to friends when they're done with them for less than market prices. I do it all the time.

The i9-7960X is a high core count / high thread count CPU.

Because of that, the speed is actually really slow -- 2.8 GHz base frequency.

The chip has a TDP of 165W; if the speed were to be, for an example, 4.40 GHz (advertised max boost speed) all the time, on all 16 cores, it would be like a 300W chip. 300W at stock would be insane.

 

If you are using the CPU for gaming + coding + adobe software, you are looking at the wrong thing if the i9-7960X is in your list.

Even the i7-7820X should not be on your list of CPUs to consider potentially.

 

I would be looking at CPUs with higher frequency, and lesser amount of cores -- 6 or 8 cores, with multi-threading.

That would be something like the i7 / i9 on the LGA 1151 platform, or Ryzen 5 / 7.

• i7-8700 (non-K / K)
• i7-9700 (non-K / K / KF)
• i9-9900 (non-K / K / KF)

• Ryzen 5 - 3600 / 3600X
• Ryzen 7 - 3700X / 3800X

 

What level of coding are you going to be doing?

C / C++? Python? .NET? Java? PEARL? 

 

Are you going to be programming for chips / ASICs / FPGAs?

Verilog? VHDL? 

 

And for "Adobe" ... is this PDF using Adobe Acrobat?
Or editing 4K+ photos?

Editing movie clips?  NOT YouTube gaming montage clips, like actual high resolution / high detail level clips?
