So basically I am building a new computer and want to transfer files (photos etc) to my new one.

Can I just build the computer, install the OS, plug in my old SSD to retrieve data?

The old SSD will have windows 10 installed so im not sure how or if im able to retrieve the old data

edit: or should I buy an external SSD or use a software like dropbox to transfer files???????

You can plug the old drive in, boot to the new one, and force permissions ownership and dig around for stuff, yea.

Or, you likely can just use the old drive in your new PC, and don't even get a new SSD at all, if this is a logistical option. The old PC will obviously not have a drive anymore. Can always buy it a new one....

Yes, you can. Just make sure that your BIOS is set to boot from the new SSD, not from the old one.

This doesn't really answer his questions, and its not "required", especially if going Intel to Intel or AMD to AMD. I just swapped my NVMe drive into a third mobo, all on the same install. No issues what so ever. 6700k > 8700k > 9700k all on diff mobo's.

But, it is advisable to reformat, yes...

That said, he is just trying to get old data off. So either he can use the old drive in the new build (likely fine), or format a new drive in the new build, then pop the old drive in, make sure to boot from new drive, and then go hunting around the old drive for data to move over.

Should work just fine. If you have an external HDD laying around, check if you can open it. Its basically a free sata to USB connector.

Don’t sell it until you have built the new machine and get the files transferred over. Or like I said, just use the old SSD in the new machine, no reformat required. That way all of your data will remain in tact as if you were still using the old machine.
