I’ve been curious as to if they really work, in getting all kinds of mixed reviews online and from other forums.

Do they really work? Or are they just good for WiFi connection and won’t matter if I’m hardwired in?

Sorry if this is a dumb question lol.

The big advantages are the ability to prioritise traffic. This was and is still important when there are a lot of devices using a slow connection.

If you find you are having ping issues relating to the number of devices etc then yes an expensive router will help.

There are also other features etc that can help speed things up and remove ping and latency spikes.

If your current router is up to the task then you will likely see very little benefit.

It will look cool though...
