Hi, I hope everyones keeping safe In these strange times.

I have a very old and crappy CIT psu running my H61mae35 matx 2011 board with a Celeron G530. Yes i know its bad.
Ive been looking into getting an cheap old gpu (NON EXTERNAL POWER IS ESSENTIAL)to help get me through isolation. I was thinking gtx 550ti or something under 75w anyway. (Any recommendations would be most welcome).

I’d be hopefully playing things like csgo and a few arena shooters, nothing major. So I was wondering if you guys could rate my psu and let me know if its safe or not to move forward on this. I know nothing about psus so any help would be invaluable. Thanks.

What's your country and budget ?

Hi, I mean a gpu that runs purely of the pcie slot instead of with external power connectors connecting to the psu. I'm from uk. Budget is dirt cheap, £20-40 off ebay cheap.

I'm trying to make the most out of a really crappy situation, four months plus in isolation on doctors orders with no money. That's why you're looking at this.

You didn't have to respond, you could have just carried on to the next article.

Your answer is pretty evident. That's why I asked a rhetorical question. That power supply is old, worn and not safe.

Gonna be a no from me dog.

Even a used PSU would be a good replacement, which is something I almost never recommend, but in your case, an old Corsair GS or something from eBay might be worth a look. Something decent from maybe 5 years ago that has a PCIe connector or two

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I need?

It has two 12V rails. 10A and 13A. You might not necessarily be able to output the maximum on both rails at the same time. Since it's not specified let's assume 20A max across both rails. That's 240W + the 120W for the 5V & 3.3V. So a 360W PSU from 15 years ago.

No idea how they got 450W total output for it though. Even if you go with the full 23A that still only adds up to 396W. :S

You do realize that neither of those rails can output even half of what's rated, right?

What do you mean?

No external power required as in not requiring a 6pin or 8pin PCIe connector for power. Powered by the motherboard PCIe slot. I'd hazard a guess and say that power supply doesn't have PCIe connectors.

There's only so much that you can get out of a 9 year old dual core Celeron. A dedicated GPU like the GTX550Ti would help, but it can only go so far. Don't get your expectations too high.

If your budget is DIRT CHEAP then just buy the cheapest GPU you can get that doesn't require the PCIe power connector, see if your friends have any old ones lying around they can give you or sell for cheap. Spend $20 or $30 on the GPU. Stick it in. Use it until it dies.

Not to be rude, but the cost a new PSU would be more than what the PC is worth so I can't really recommend that you buy a new PSU for it.

Thanks for clarifying.

No they're not high at all, This is why I wondered if it was even possible.

This is probably what I'll do.

No I get it, It's a piece of hot garbage. I wouldn't bother buying a PSU for it at this stage. Thanks for your well laid out response.

I know that unit - pull 200W from those 12v rails - you end up with either a shut down (good) or magic smoke (bad)

Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me.

A dual core celeron and a GPU without PCIe connectors (<75W) shouldn't consume much power so hopefully it won't be an issue.

@Horyhoohoo By the way the GTX550ti uses a fair bit of power around 100-110W and requires a 6pin connector. You might be able to find a GTX 750ti which uses a lot less power, around 60-65W, but it would likely cost more and they're pretty sought after by people upgrading old dell/HP PCs and such.

Be careful buying on sites like ebay as there are fake graphics cards being sold from China.

Ah thank you, I'm sure i found 550's without the 6pin, guess I'm mistaken. I'll def look into the 750, thanks for the help!

There's a good chance I'll leave as is.

Backup Shut down, dismantle and take many steps back. No one wants a fire, I didn't fully appreciate the situation. Today's a good a day as any to plan a new safe build.

Thank you for the input.
