Which system is better for editing videos and pictures. I "hear" windows 8 is more optimize for editing and has better performance than Win 7 in most areas. However I can't really find anything solid that support this. This is just something I hear from co-workers and things floating around the web.

Windows 8 is better in pretty much every way. If you don't like it, then use whatever you prefer.

I would just go with Windows 8.1 since it will have more support in the long run since Windows 7 has been out for a long time already.

Windows 8.1 because you can have better Direct X support in the future. Also, it is pretty easy to bypass the UI with programs and simply putting the desktop as the first tile and just hit enter when you boot in.

Well I figured that XP has been going for 12 years now and isn't completely dead yet so figured that 7 would last longer.

Technically you only need Win XP SP2 x64 and you are set. What you really need is a beast of a CPU (6+ cores), tons of fast ram and fast storage.. As of today, CUDA is most mature, however, if you only convert h.264videos for your phone or whatever,Intel's quicksync is the king. (CuDA, QuickSync, OpencCL all are compatible with modern operating systems.

*8.1

Exactly.

Windows 8.1 has better performance and takes like 10% less system resources than Windows 7 did.

Windows 8.1 makes better use and seems to be faster on my build than Windows 7 ever ran.
