Hi guys,

first time posting here, normally lurking around but now I need some help.

My sis needs/wants a new Pc with some powerful specs for music production/creation (idk the budget yet, I'd guess about 1-2 thousand dollars). She needs one in at least 1-5 years, and I told her that I could build her one, since I'm relatively experienced with building PC's.

But I have no clue regarding hackintosh builds, especially for which hardware I can use. It would be really kind if you guys could help me out :)

Welcome to the LTT forums! This depends, are you willing to go through the effort of running it natively and get the most out of your hardware (after serious planning) or emulate it on top of linux giving you much more freedom with hardware but with a performance penalty?

i feel like maybe if your sister relies on your for building it, she shouldn't want to have a Hackintosh.

Hackintosh builds are finnicky, with some parts just flat out not working and a music production rig probably need some sort of soundcard, while Hackintosh's need to be configured with pretty strict hardware limitations.

Well, I would say running it natively would be better, but does that restrict the selection of hardware? But depending on the level of difficulty I would consider running it on top of Linux, as long as she'll be able to do her work properly and reliably. :)

Hmmm I see :0 so a normal Mac would be working better?

depends if she's comfortable with troubleshooting the hackintosh when something breaks because of a OS update or something.

if she's not, she might just want to get a mac.

Well, I don't think she would want that to be honest ^^,

But is it that common that hardware can become obsolete just like that? :(

not sure to be honest, but i know that it does happen.

also, you can't just update a hackintosh like you would a mac. minor updates would be fine, but full OS updates require you to update the bootloader and kexts aswell. so if your sister accidentally tries a system update she might brick her system.

also, if you build a hackintosh on an AMD system you're likely to run into problems with imessage, facetime and icloud.

I see, I'll rethink it first before deciding it! Thank you!

Running it natively severely restricts your hardware selection as you need to aim for hardware that can actually be found in macs, or very close to it. MOBOs is where your life gets fun... While you are getting more out of your hardware it is a pain in the neck to setup. Running it in Linux on the other hand while is still rather difficult but it gives you much more freedom in your choice of CPUs and MOBOs and demands significantly less upkeep, this allows you to build monsters that you could only dream of being able to afford through Apple.
