Noctua NH-D15S orientation and RAM coverage

Nozyspy

Does anyone here have the Noctua NH-D15S mounted so that it exhausts vertically? Since the S variant is asymmetrical i am wondering if the 'short side' can be mounted facing the RAM when it is mounted to exhaust vertically, so that it does not cover the RAM聽slots. After all if you're gonna spend money on nice fancy RGB memory you don't want to cover it up!聽馃

Thanks for any info or pictures you can provide!聽馃憤

D15S is supposed to not cover up any RAM slots if you dont add a fan to the far right side of the heatsink, but why make it exhaust vertically? It's clearly not meant to do that since the heatsink is shifted to the top left comparing to the D15 in order to clear all memory slots and top PCIe slot (D15 does cover up top PCIe slot, though not all ATX boards place PCIe slot that high). If you keep the heatsink mounted in the right way, then fan will be blowing through a gap with nothing in the middle, wasting power without generating meaningful聽airflow through the fins

I have seen the normal D15 exhaust vertically, however it still seems to overhang the RAM slots. I am intending to mount my graphics card vertically so there will likely be much less trouble with the PCIe slots with a riser cable. I would prefer to get the beefiest air cooler possible without obscuring the rest of the internals, aesthetics and all that.

as expected

how? Those that replace the horizontal PCIe brackets into 2 vertical ones also take up the top slot, and most cards are that all so PCIe clearance is just as much of a problem

It can still hang over the slots but there's usually ample space for ram due to the聽cutout.聽

It will still cover the ram when rotated. Do you already have the cooler? If you want to see the sticks, get a different cooler.聽

Ill have to check the measurements, but there are quite a lot of PCIe brackets, so it should be mountable lower down if that's what you mean. Im just interested whether it is possible to mount the D15S in such a fashion, at the moment. While i consider my options.聽

Yes.

System specs?

Where are you shopping / located? Budget?

I'm in the UK, looking at 9900k + ASUS Maximus XI Formula, OR 3900x + one of the ASUS Crosshair VIII boards, RAM聽probably 32gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro. Budget is roughly 拢1500 at this time, since i already have PSU, and GTX1080 which don't need replacing just yet.

Alternate coolers would be the Noctua NH-U12A (alas no Chromax covers yet) or the U14S.

The Fuma 2 isn't far behind and should completely clear the ram slots:聽https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/YsHRsY/scythe-fuma-2-5117-cfm-cpu-cooler-scfm-2000

NH-D15S will still overhang the RAM slots on most boards if it is installed to exhaust to the top with the short side facing the RAM. Go with the NH-U12A if you want to stay clear of the RAM completely. Performance is similar.

I like the U12A, but those poop brown fans... I wish Noctual would hurry up with their black versions, and also the Chromax cover they are supposed to be making for the U12A.

I also rather like the look of the NH-U14S. With some 2000rpm Noctua聽fans it should have lots of cooling.
