GPU went up in sparks; new PSU too?

The Cool n00B

So last night I was playing some GTA V when my computer suddenly died and my room fell dead silent. Confused, I looked to said computer and saw a couple nasty lookin sparks come out from the power connector on my graphics card. Now I'm left with a dead 1070 and must buy a new card. At least it gives me an excuse to upgrade, right?

Anyway, as I woke up this morning, I was thinking about what happened and it occured to me that the culprit could've been my PSU. It's an old EVGA unit, probably 5-6 yrs old and I bought it refurbished (had no idea, this is why you read product descriptions!). Is it possible that the PSU could've fried my card like this? Should I get a new one? If so which one should I get (around 650W)?

My rig: Intel Core i7-8700K OC 4.8 | NZXT Kraken X62 | ASUS Z370-F | 16 GB Trident Z RGB 3000 (2x8) | EVGA 1070 SC | EVGA SuperNova NEX650G1 | NZXT H700 | Samsung 250GB 850-EVO | 2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs

I just think it might be good enough to buy a new power supply Unit.

Try diagnosing the motherboard with another PSU and check if its damaged or not.

Then what id recommend is this PSU:

seens really expensive for just a 650 watt 80+ gold affair. Isn't the Corsair TX650M close to $100?

Trash beauty:

CPU: Xeon X5550

GPU: RX 570 4GB (defective)

SSD: Fattydove Racing 240GB

HDD: WD Blue 320GB

Motherboard: HP Z400

Ram: 6x2GB DDR3 1066

PSU: Corsair TX650
