This is my first backlit mechanical keyboard (a Corsair K70 Cherry MX Brown) , it was expensive and I was hoping I wouldn't have to change it for quite a while. But only a few days after I bought it (at Christmas) I noticed an LED was out, I thought that was just unfortunate (I'm not sure why I didn't return it straight away, probably because I would be without a keyboard till a new one came since my old one is broken).

Since then, not 2 months on, 4 more LEDs have died, making 5 in total. I've included a picture of the keyboard for reference (the dead LEDs are labelled in the order they died). I'm not sure if it's just coincidence but all the dead ones seem to be around the periphery. I know that LEDs eventually die but this is surely more than that.
Does anyone with more experience with backlit keyboards know roughly how long the LEDs should last?
I will contact Corsair as soon as I can find the support details that came in the box.

I guess it's just a bad unit. I've had my QuickFire TK since Thursday, October 24, 2013, and (my brother) spilled water on it, and not a single LED has died.

you know the date you got your keyboard? lol

This kinda scared me a bit because I also have the Corsair K70 MX Brown keyboard.

Luckily, none has showed signs of dead LEDs.

RMA it! Corsair is very good with RMAs especially with dead LEDs

  • 5 months later...

Sorry to dredge up this old post, but I have the same situation with my K70. [[ TLDNR: I've had 2 boards with fried LEDs, the second of which is a RMA replacement which dropped LEDs within 2 months.]]

I submitted an RMA and got a replacement for my first keyboard which had about five or more dead LEDs. Here I am less than 2 months later and the replacement keyboard has four dead LEDs already. I won't be RMAing this time as the first one cost me over $70 is postage. I may as well buy a new keyboard at that cost. Considering Corsair sell a lot of "refurbished" items on their site, I wouldn't be surprised if I've been issued with a refurbished keyboard. I don't know really, all I know for sure is I'm very annoyed. At $160, these boards should last longer than this. Neither board had any spills or mistreatment either.

Linus said in the Corsair RGB keyboard preview (I think) that even he has a dead LED on his K70. At the time of posting that video it was just one. I wonder if Linus has any more yet. In that same video he stated that it was to electrostatic discharge (I believe Corsair gave him this explanation) that causes these lights to die, and that the new RGB range has a different location for the LED so that it should eliminate the issue. In light of this, however, it's worth noting that I know of three other people with Corsair backlit keys and none of them have any dead LEDs on their boards.

Is this just my bad luck? Or am I more electrically charged than most people? I've worked on a lot of computers and I'm yet to fry any components, so I think a keyboard LED is an extremely unlikey thing to fry.

Sadly, mine started dying a couple of weeks ago. It survived about 9 months. Problem is, if you RMA it, you'll only get the black/red cherry mx equivalent, not the gunmetal/blue variant, as the product is EOL (no longer available).

The K70 is available in Black with Red LEDs for each of the 3 switch types since it was a very popular request.

e: Just noticed it was an old topic.
