What's up with valve index on ebay?

Given that there's a small manufacturing delay on the valve index, I figured I'd search for a used kit.

 

Much to my surprise, full kits -- even used ones -- are going for above retail.  Often way above retail.  I'm assuming it's because of the manufacturer delays, but is there something else going on that might impact my buying decision?  (FWIW, a delay of 8 weeks is no big deal to me, so if all that's going on on eBay is some good ole fashioned price gouging, I'm happy to go that route.)

Demand is high, supply is short. You even out the odds by increasing prices on what's available to meet the demand

Besides whats already said, Index hasn't been on markets that long that people who had actually purchased and used it for a bit, either as entry level VR or for testing purposes, would be into selling them. And when you go to sell something, you look at what others are asking for it. If the asking price is high, then it requires someone to want to get rid off their stuff quickly. This is pretty much same as with GPU shortage when etherium mining was going on strong.
