Framedrops/stuttering - CoD:MW & Division 2

Hey guys,

I seem to be having issues with the 2 games mentioned in the topic title. My PC spec is:

i5-4590 (4C 4T, 3.2Ghz, 3.4Ghz boost)

H81 motherboard

2 x 4GB DDR3 RAM

GTX1080

750w PSU

I am running dual 1920x1080p monitors; but games are not stretched across them, I play games on a single monitor.

I seem to get good FPS in both games; but then the division 2 constantly drops frames to anywhere between 3 and 25fps, and can hang/stutter while it does so. Whilst CoD:MW does the same, and the Warzone game mode just crashes on me all the time.

I don't have any issues with other games, though whilst troubleshooting to try and remedy these 2 games, I did notice that most games seem to use 100% of the CPU. Even games for which my CPU is not the minimum spec.

Any idea what the issue might be? Let me know if you need any more system specs to aid in troubleshooting/diagnostics.

Would more RAM (16GB) help? As don't really have any money for making upgrades ATM, but can get 16GB DDR3 second hand for £30. I was just given the GTX1080, to replace my older GTX970, by a friend.

Thanks in advance.

Your CPU is a major limiting factor. It's not fast enough to keep pace with the 1080

I was worried someone was going to say that, as I didn't want to have to shell out for new CPU ATM. But those 2 games are pretty much unplayable.

Would upping the resolution then downscaling to 1080p, thus putting more strain on the GPU and lowering my overall FPS relieve any of the strain on the CPU?

upgrade the CPU to something like the Ryzen 5 3600

Is that the minimum I should be looking at these days? I did plan to go AMD next upgrade, but really didn't want to do the upgrade now.

If I got a 2nd hand i7 from the 4 series (to fit my MB socket), would that be worth it? Or just throwing the money away?

you could go for much less but that would be the best bang for the Buck. although it depends if the games if you are playing are CPU dependant or GPU dependant. could you give me some examples of games you might play?

could you also quote me so that it gives me a notification, thanks.

Higher resolution won't help. An i7 would be a small upgrade but really, you should consider a 1600AF or 3600 on a B450 board

Any idea how long I could expect the r5 3600 to be relevant? I got the i5-4590 when it first came out, and it has done me until now.

I mostly play Rainbow Six: Siege, but don't have any issues with that. Other than the 2 games in the title, other games I play if I include franchises I like and then other things I have played recently, would be:

Hitman & Hitman 2

GTA 5

Batman Arkham Games

Kingdom Come Deliverance

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

ARMA

Half Life 2

Borderlands 2

Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy

Tomb Raider (reboot franchise)

Hopefully that list will help.

Just a quick update, I turned on VSYNC in both of the aforementioned games; and for the most part saw a remarkable drop in stuttering and hanging.

I assume this is because the CPU was bottlenecking quite as hard, since it wasn't pushing over 60fps any more?

Warzone mode on CoD and Division 2 did still see drops in frame rate, but normally to around 30fps, rather than 2-12fps as previously.
