Move from a server to another

Hello everyone,

We want to transfer everything from our server (domains, databases, websites files, emails, etc) to another on the same server provider.

Is there any tool that we can do that? Our server uses Plesk panel.

We know how to transfer a website but not a whole server to a new one unfortunately.

What is the best way to do that with no downtime, or as less as possible?

Thank for your time!

How is the server setup? What programs, os?

Do you have backups you can easily restore?

Is this a physical server or on the cloud somewhere.

Normally you have to move every program separtly, use vms or containers next time to make this much easier. Id move to vms or conainers now.

First of all, I'm sorry you're having to deal with Plesk. It's a dumpster fire! (I have battle scars to prove it)

That said, typically you'll want to follow their migration path and procedure. Again, if this is to migrate from one server to another. Otherwise, you could just transport the VM to another provider (assuming they let you, not sure) and then point DNS to the new public IP or update the NS designation if applicable.

It's not a physical server. The server running Linux and we have access over Plesk Panel.

We have a website to a well known hosting company and we want to move from the current plan to a dedicated server.
Unfortunately the company does not provide any help or services regarding that so we have to do it.

We know how to transfer the databases and website files but what about email addresses, settings, etc?

I believe what you're asking is: How to migrate from shared hosting to dedicated server.. This is the punishment for going the cheap route.. Set it all up from scratch.

Doesn't seems easy to do that, especially thinking for a website that is almost 20 years old.

So Plesk is a shared hosting platform; a suite of different programs that work together as one solution. The underlying OS it runs on doesn't really matter to the customer (unless your code is in .NET). Plesk can host email, but it's really tying into Mail Enable (for example) which is a program all by itself. The end-user doesn't know that, but the person responsible for administrating Plesk would. To the end-user (paying client), all of it is centralized in one access portal.

It's not going to be a straight migration. There isn't a button to just download everything and then upload to another provider or server yourself. You're going to have to download all the content separately, upload, and configure online somewhat differently. Specifically if the other side isn't running Plesk.

I recommend you seek consultation with a web developer. This kind of stuff is in their wheelhouse to help you understand what you've got, and how best to integrate and get it all back online. If there's any other deficiencies and/or requirements needed, they should be able to assist you with that as well.

TLDR, there's no "easy way"

On the new dedicated server we have the option to choose between Plesk and cPanel? What you guys suggest us to use?
We are using Plesk right now.

Furthermore, does the Linux distribution matter to us? I mean between CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian and Arch.

Since you're familiar with Plesk, you can stick with it unless you have a reason to change.

Linux distribution doesn't matter. At the heart of it they are all Linux, the reason to go with any particular one is preference. If you know a certain one better than the others it's in your interest to go with what you know. If you don't know any distro nor have preference, find out what other people whom you trust like or what hosting companies you'd consider doing business with unanimously offer. This is so you can get help if you need it and not get stuck with having to learn a new distro if you move again to a host that doesn't offer the distro you've spent time learning.
