RAM Speeds

Hello, 
My current ATX-motherboard only allows 2133mhz ram, and as i want to upgrade my ram to 16gb, and was thinking about getting faster ram now that i was at it (3000mhz). I found a good deal on a used mini-itx mobo, which i was thinking about getting (anyways, as i wish to build my pc smaller) which supports 3000mhz ram. My plan was to upgrade to the other motherboard, and buy 16gb 3000mhz ram, but i heard some rumours about my intel i7 6700 would do so that i could not even utalize the full 3000mhz of the ram? Is this true, and is there a big improvement between 2133mhz and 3000mhz ram? :)

Looks like the i7 6700 supports up to DDR4 2133MHz, personally in using different ram speeds I don't notice a huge difference but I don't go back and forth that much. Buying the 3000MHz ram isn't necessarily a bad idea because you would be able to use it with newer parts in the future if you were to upgrade. There is a possibility that you could run into some issues with under clocking your ram but generally that is not a problem

What motherboard are you currently using? 2133MHz is just the standard default speed, on most motherboards 2400-2666MHz is considered OC'ing your memory, so even if you plug in a 3000MHz stick of RAM it will only run at 2133MHz until you enable XMP/DOCP or manually adjust the memory frequency and usually the voltage as well.

Yes, but all your RAM will run with the slowest speeds and timings, so it's not recommended unless there's no way around it.
