Question Hello! I'm having terrible Minecraft FPS with an overqualified PC. I was thinking you guys might have some ideas...

So I just recently built myself a new computer and it's been working great for everything except Minecraft. It shouldn't have any problem at all with it but it's struggling. Usually it'll at least get 120+ fps, but it will pretty often dip even to 55 or so. That wouldn't be a problem except if I use even the most basic resource pack it absolutely destroys it. I know an RTX 2060 super definitely shouldn't be struggling like this. It's driving me crazy.
Thank you guys so much for even trying to help.
If you need more info please tell me!

I also ran HWInfo for a minute while playing if that helps at all I can upload that log too!

  • Specs: Ryzen 7 2700x
  • RTX 2060 Super
  • 16GB DDR4

Things I have tried:

  • Using multiple different version of MC, Stable and Unstable
  • Making sure its using my card instead of integrated graphics
  • Allocating more and less RAM for MC. ex, 2G,4G,6G. No Difference
  • Using Nvidia control panel to manually set javaw to use the 2060
  • Setting high CPU priority
  • Rolling back driver
  • Doing a fresh install of windows
  • Making sure I am using x64 java

1st, i wouldn't call it "powerful", it's a decent mid range.

run HWiNFO64 in the background and check what is going on.

Thank you my lord for correcting me on the power of my peasant machine. I am so glad I asked you to show me the error of my ways. I shall update it IMMEDIATELY.

But yes, I had that idea as well. I used MSI afterburner to check all my temps, usages.. etc nothing seemed to stand out. Temps are well within spec, using a normal amount of ram, normal GPU and CPU usage.

(edit) I just ran HWinfo while playing. I personally didn't see anything that looked off, however I am extremely far from an expert. If you would like to see the log, here it is. Thanks

Try and upgrade drivers

I gave that a go, no difference. All my drivers are up to date.

I also tried rolling them back a few times to see what happens, nothing.

Might be a ram prob

In which way? like not enough allocated, cause I tried allocating various amounts to no difference.

Or like a physical hardware issue?

Well minecraft defaults 2gb of ram

You can change this in version settings under Advanced settings JVA Arguments then there should be Along the lines of xm2gb

Change that number and hope for the best

I already addressed that solution in the initial post. I stated above that I tried multiple different allocation sizes to no effect.

ok

Well Heres something i copyed and pasted

Type graphics settings into the windows search bar. Afterwards, select Classic app and browse to the Minecraft javaw.exe and add it. Select options and select your dedicated GPU, and try it in game.

if you do its prob your graphics card

Yep Java is installed x64bit. I Don't think being too powerful is really a thing. The card works fine for absolutely everything else, so I'm quite certain that's not the problem.

i get over 100 fps on 1080p no mods minecraft with a 1060, at 384 drivers. yours should be slightly higher, as a 2060 is a raytracing at 1060 fps card.

do other games have this issue? also i see 8gb-ish ram usage of the 12 given to the game. on linux so my idle ram is 1.7-ishgb. yours may be higher idle since i assume you are on windows.

I saw that too. That's the only thing that really stands out to me is that it's using a LOT of ram. No other games have this issue. It's really just MC. I know MC uses slightly more ram on Windows, but definitely not that much. My gf plays on a laptop with 4Gs and it never even goes over 2g in usage. Any idea what could cause this?
