Getting back a proper PC

Uindy84

Hello, so this is my first post here. My main PC for the past few years has been an Asus UL80VT. Which is a great computer in its own right, but not so much for the gaming, and Steam keeps tempting me to play PC games. They install and then I burn myself, go partially deaf and get like 12 fps....

So, I decided I needed a new desktop PC that could actually handle some real games, and actually be upgradable. I watched a ton of Linus's videos as well as doing some research on Newegg. This is what I came up with, the parts are on their way and I will be posting pictures once I get them here, and then while putting this all together,

CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i (Not really necessary, but so beautiful...)

Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45

Memory- Corsair Vengeance 1600 8GB (2x4GB)

Hard Drive: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB

Power Supply: Seasonic G-Series 550W 80-Plus Gold

Video Card. EVGA GTX 760 SC

Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ Side Window

Monitor: BenQ GW2750HM

Keyboard: Corsair Vengeance K70 CherryMX Brown switches.

Can't wait to get her all put together!!

Is the SSD enough for you? Are you sure you don't want a HDD for mass storage?

The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.

The corsair vengeance ram is a bit overpriced and a 760 is a bit underpowered with a 4670k, but otherwise it's an ideal build. Can't wait to see it!

Woo!

what's your max budget for all of it, and do you have a windows 8 license?

Overall you have pretty good choices but I would personally change the monitor to a cheaper, but better looking IPS panel (these days most IPS panels don't have horrible response times), the video card to one with an EVGA ACX cooler or another non-reference cooler from another brand, the psu to something that is made by seasonic but has better bang for the buck, the  motherboard to a gigabyte or asus one (the g45 series has always had problems) and ram to something like kingston hyperx blu because it's cheaper and sexier ;)

Well, right now I have a 2TB external drive with most of my media. I'm considering grabbing a hard drive but Fry's this week while waiting for parts, but it's not "mission critical".

I did go back and forth on the 760, 780, but I didn't ened up deciding to spend that money on getting a good monitor, instead of just a basic one.

Side note, the Z87 GD45 use PWM fans for the CPU. You can't change the mode to voltage. I think the H100i is a 3 pins... So you either plug it in the CPU header and the fans spins at 100% all the time. Or you will be plugging it on a system fans header. That's what I did with my NH-D14. I didn't mind loosing 2 sysfan header as I got a fan controller for my case fans.

The 760 is the ACX cooler edition. One of the reasons I went with that particular one. I know it's a bit shallow on the motherboard choice but looks are a little important. I love ASUS products, solid company, but I can't stand the gold them on their mainstream boards. The ROG boards look great but I can;t justify spending that kind of money.

I bought a windows 8.1 license. Not totally convinced on Windows 8, but I'm going to give it a shot.

Thanks for the tip!! I know the Define R4 comes with a fan controller. So, I should be good if I need to plug in my my CPU cooler fans into the system slots.

if you have games on that 2tb hdd, that might not be the best idea. If I were u I'd take it apart and just put it internally if that is an option

Finally my Santa hat doesn't look out of place

It looks good to me, but I would suggest 2 changes.

1) I would change the SSD for something like a corsair neutron. The EVO series is TLC, which is getting better, but is still not as good as the MLC type flash in the higher end samsung drives, as well as the neutron series by corsair.

2) I would also really try to squeeze out the extra bucks for at least a 770. I think the 780 is probably bordering on overkill for 1080p right now, but I think the 770 is a sweet spot to be, and will age better with the new games coming out this year, but that's just me. Hell, I'd probably go with an 8350/8320 and do an AMD build to get the better GPU in there, but what do I know.

Seasonic makes great PSU's, but I think they can be a little overpriced sometimes, and a nice unit from corsair, silverstone, or even one of the rosewill Capstone units can give you more bang for your buck. However, that's up to you.
