NVlink and OpenGL

I play a lot of indie games that don't really have any sort of SLI support but I heard that NVlink basically pools your GPU's resources. Does the game developer need to explicitly program multi-GPU support for older games to run on systems with multiple GPU's connected over NVLink? Would this be something only available in DirectX 12 games or could it theoretically work in OpenGL games?
