Suggested encryption software for non-tech person?

I've got a friend who isn't very technologically advanced and wants to encrypt his drive. I told him i could do if for him but he insisted on doing it himself. What software would you suggest he use?

I recommend not doing it because encrypting a drive is kind of useless, just tell him to back it up (whatever files are important enough to actually encrypt his drive) on a safe drive often

He lives in a boarding house and for some reason he thinks someone is going on his computer and messing with the stuff on his external HDD. I fixed the getting on the perpetrator getting on his computer.
