It almost sounds as if you are describing the cable on an original Xbox controller.

The Xbox 360 controllers were either wireless or USB.

It's probably a 3rd party controller with a breakaway cable on it, the guitar hero guitars for the 360 also had as do some of the newer 3rd Part Xbone controllers, you can buy the female end of the breakaway (the part with the USB plug on it) on Ebay typically or buy a cheap 3rd part like Rock Candy controller and use the other end from it if you don't mind that they may not match.

 

They have those so if someone were to like walk by your console or something instead of yanking the console off the where ever it is, the cable breaksaway.
