No video output from gpu

Hi, when I power up my pc it sometimes works for a while then the screen goes black I get no video output from pc but everything is running (e.g. music or windows sounds). After it does this and I try to reboot it powers up but with no video output and no power to peripherials.

The motherboard doesnt give no error messages.

The pc runs normaly without the gpu when I use the onboard graphics.

I tried swapping the power supply but this didn't help.

I also tried reseating the gpu that also didn't help

The specs are:

Cpu: I5-4690k

Mobo: Msi gaming3 z97

Ram: 16gb hyperx ram

Gpu: Gainward phantom gtx970

Psu: A 600w something

And a 256ssd

I hope not the only reason why I tend to believe that this is not the case is that it somethimes works for a while I even managed to play a bit of project cars 2 yesterday

I had a failing GTX 660, did the same thing, sometimes, when playing games that didn't stress it, it was fine, but other times, not.

Only 1 way to really be certain, and that's pop in a known good GFX card and see what occurs.

Unfortunately I have no other gpu to slot in.
