Hello,

First time poster here and just wanted some opinions on my decision to upgrade my pc.

I currently have an amd r9 390x gpu and a i7-4790k CPU.

Its been about 6 years since I have built my pc that I primarily use for gaming and wanted to know if I should make the jump to an rx 5500 or maybe even 5600 as long as my CPU can handle it. I'm pretty new at all this and I'm not really looking to run on ultra settings or anything. I just want 60 fps or better on games like call of duty and apex legends. An actual upgrade may not even be necessary but I was just thinking its getting kind of old and I have the money now so I figured I would ask. Any and all help would be appreciated.

I'm looking to spend up to 400 on an upgrade.

You should definitely upgrade your CPU first! Newer cards will be bottlenecked by it.

Where are you buying so that I can check some prices and whats the rest of the system configuration?

5500 is a downgrade. Look at the 5600 XT or 5700

yes, but 5600XT/5700 is getting in to bottlenecking with that CPU, especially if OP doesn't want to play on ultra and wants to have nice FPS

FOLDING MONTH 2021! GOGOGO and save on some heating costs 🙂

Thank you both for the input so far. I have been confused over this for the past couple of days. I kept seeing that the 5500 was going to work really well with my cpu, but it didn't seem like much of an upgrade if any at all. I guess what I really need to do is start thinking about new CPUs, which means new everything unfortunately lol.

A new CPU is definitely a good idea. The i7 4000 series aren't that old that you'll have too much issues but you'll still be limited in games. I'd say look at the R5 3600 or wait for the upcoming R5 4600 ;)
