Solved - Noctua NH-D15 Chromax.Black white serial number

TangoIndiaPapa

Got it mounted to AMD Ryzen 9 3900X and works nicely.

After mounting it, noticed the white serial number printed at the top of fans.

See attached picture.

It's very noticeable in open case and through a tempered glass.

Of course, I saw this review after I bought it from Amazon.

I already contacted Noctua Support, and they said to try rubbing alcohol to remove those serial numbers.  It didn't work.

Next, they said too bad and told me to return it if I didn't like it.  Man oh man.

Anyway, the reason I am posting it here is to see if anyone else has other solutions that works without damaging the fan.  Different chemical?

Or does anyone know black color code that will match the color? I tried a few different black markers but none matches the color.

It was a big decision for me to spend $100 to buy the product after reviewing their product pictures and videos, which did not show any of those serial numbers.

Don't even want new fans from Noctua as I don't want to deal with them after their disappointing customer service.

Just want to fix it myself if I could without damaging the fans.

Are the white text on all for sides of the fans or can you turn the them to either side by remounting them?

Tried to flip it over 180 but cables get in the way.  Side way doesn't fit as clips are only set one way.

I have the same cooler.

You can try something like a black dry erase marker, just press it on to blotch it out. It probably won't be perfect.

Personally I like it. Reminds me of the serial numbers on military equipment.

I heard the DRP4 replacement fixes that?

Jokes aside... leave it to Noctua to make something ugly!

Now that you mention it like that maybe my perspective needs to change.  I was in the Marines for 4 years a long time ago, and I liked military marking, but I didn't have to pay my own money for the equipments... ?

Are you sure the rubbing alcohol you tested was strong enough?

I found this thread on reddit: with one that succeded in removing them with robbing alcohol:

Ok, I'll try a stronger version.  One that I used was at 70%.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Solved!  Thank everyone!

Thanks NeZz_DK!

After looking carefully at the photo you linked, I realized that I need to take the fan out and rub it rigorously.

I was gently it rubbing it in place before and didn't want to damage it.

Got 91% rubbing alcohol at the corner store and vigorously rubbed it using a coarser cloth material like for 5 min straight.

It's not 100% gone gone, but gone enough that it's not annoying me! ?

See the result.  I'll take care of the other one once I can get 99% rubbing alcohol.

Thank you!  Much appreciate your help!

Great to hear that it worked, and that is going to look sick when both cleaned!.

Thanks again NeZz_DK and everyone!

Final picture of cleaned fans!  A good looking cooler now.

Final steps:

1. Get 90% or higher rubbing alcohol or Isopropyl alcohol

2. Take the fans off of cooler

3. Take a piece of cotton cloth

4. Dab alcohol and rub vigorously for a few min

  • 2 months later...

Workaround to anyone who either doesn’t have access to 91% or is lazy and looking for a quicker fix:

I blacked mine out with a sharpe and then immediately rubbed it with alcohol, which thins the ink enough to blend in with the texture of the fan, achieving what I believe to be the same results.

Again, I’m sure actually removing the numbers is better but damn if this didn’t work pretty well and require much less effort.
