Best NAS on the market?

Go to solution Solved by Net Runner,

You have to share some more details and requirements with us. With a given budget, you can build a DIY NAS that will be twice as powerful and faster than any Synology/QNAP for the money. Another question is the applications and ecosystem Synology offers since their DSM is really great. But with a project like XPenology https://xpenology.org/, even this one is not a problem.

Since you are building a NAS for backups, according to 3-2-1 rule https://www.vmwareblog.org/3-2-1-backup-rule-data-will-always-survive/ you will need some sort of public cloud copy some time anyways. Synology and QNAP have decent cloud-offload capabilities but still limited and sometimes vendor locked compared to complete freedom of DIY approach which is another good point to think about.

Hi guys, I am looking into purchasing a NAS for file backup. My budget is about $1500 - $2000. What brand is the most reliable? I am also open to building my own solution.

Here is the one I am thinking about buying : https://www.amazon.com/Synology-Bay-DiskStation-DS2419-Diskless/dp/B07NF987TP/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=nas+12+slot&qid=1584063403&sr=8-8

My PC : Ryzen 7 3800X | ROG Crosshair VIII Hero WiFi | Trident Z RGB 32 GB DDR4-3600 | Aorus RTX 2080 SUPER | NZXT H710 | MP600 2 TB, 970 EVO Plus 2 TB, WD Black 4 TB HDD | SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Gold 750W | NZXT KRAKEN X72 + a bunch of corsair ql rgb fans

Peripherals : G Pro Wireless, G513 Carbon (Linear), Corsair Virtuoso RGB SE , LG 38GL950G-B

If you're looking for pre-builds Synology and QNAP are among the most popular.

I can't comment on the pros & cons of each though as I build all mine custom.

How much storage do you need?

What speeds do you want?

Does it have to do anything else? ?

What protocols do you want to use?

The most of Synology and QNAP boxes should do the job. The devil is in details. To make each of them more reliable but also performant enough, get SSDs over spindle drives. I'm not against HDDs. SSDs just faster and have fair DWPD to set up them even into a NAS. Otherwise you need elaborate the number HDDs to IO requirements in order to get the performance but also reliability.
